Wednesday Word of the Week

I’m reading a fabulous book by Lincoln Child called Full Wolf Moon.  He’s one of my favorite authors, check it out.

Anyway, one of the words I came across is:

Chitinous – a nitrogen-containing polysaccharide, related chemically to cellulose, that forms a semitransparent horny substance and is a principal constituent of the exoskeleton, or outer covering, of insects, crustaceans, and arachnids.

Wednesday Word of the Week

So I realize that today isn’t Wednesday but I wasn’t home Wednesday and didn’t have anything queued up so here is your word of the week…for last week, haha 🙂

I’m still reading the book Dark Money by Jane Mayer and came across another word that I had to look up in the dictionary – yes I still use one of those.  So the word of the week is:

Apostasy –  the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief

You looking at me?

Last Saturday a friend asked me to go hiking with her.  We met at the Prairie Moraine Park in Verona and caught part of the Ice Age Trail.  Round trip for the section that we did was about 5 miles.  The weather was beautiful, cool, sunny and a bit breezy.  Perfect for working up a sweat.  We didn’t run into too many people while walking so we basically had the trail to ourselves which was nice.  Along the trail we ran into some goats and chickens, just hanging out in this enclosure.  There wasn’t a home or a barn in sight and we thought it odd that they were just there in the middle of this hiking trail.  They weren’t that friendly, but they were curious about us.

If you ever get a chance, I suggest taking a few hours and hike along the Ice Age Trail. It was nice getting out in nature and it was good getting some exercise.

More gun control?

No word of the week this week.  I saw on the news tonight about a shooting at a congressional baseball practice and I have mixed feelings about this.

You can read about it here:

Alexandria Shooting

Let me say this up front that I do not condone this act of violence on anyone, no matter your political affiliation, sexual orientation, race, etc.  And I’m not making an excuse for this person and his behavior, but I have to wonder if this guy was just so frustrated with what has been happening in the world within the last few years that he felt that this was his only recourse or he felt that was the only way that he could be heard.  I mean you can only shit on the little guy for so long before he gets to the point of doing something reckless and dangerous – which is what happened here.

I feel bad for the people at the ball park that got hurt and injured by this man.  I feel bad for the families of everyone because now they have experienced trauma and they must learn how to deal with this.  I feel bad for the shooters family because I’m sure they are wondering why the person that they loved behaved in this manner and they must now learn to live with the aftermath of such a horrific event.

I have to wonder, too, when did he purchase the gun?  Was this a pre-meditated event?  Or did he just one day  decide to buy a gun and shoot at some republicans?  Where did he purchase the gun?  Was it while he was living in Illinois?  Or when he moved to Virginia.  You know Virginia is for lovers, but he has no love for the republicans, I guess (trying humor to lighten this up a bit).  I didn’t hear on the new of any of this being reported on.  Maybe it is too soon to even have this information.

I’m just trying to make sense of this, just like everyone else is I’m sure.  And I have to wonder if, instead of loosening the gun control laws that we take another look at this and maybe the gun control laws should be tightened.  Or maybe the gun control laws need to be looked at and re-written with the intent of having responsible gun control, instead of intent of fear that the “rights to bear arms” is being taken away.  And for the record I do believe in the right to bear arms, I just ask that responsibility be included in this.

*sigh* I know that people feel very passionately about this and I can see both sides of the story ( I am a Libra after all) but I just don’t know what to think or what to feel about this.  I’m trying to not be political of this, but I have to say what do the republicans expect after the inciteful political year we just head.  People can only take so much before they just lose control and do something stupid.

I’m rambling, people.  What do you think?

What is the fascination Wisconsin?

I over heard recently about Wisconsin lawmakers proposing a new bill that would allow people of Wisconsin to carry concealed weapons without a permit and without training.  You can read about it here:

Wisconsin bill would allow concealed weapons

I am trying to wrap my  head around this.  Why?  Why would anyone think that this is a good thing?  What is the state of Wisconsin lawmakers fascination with weapons, open carry and concealed carry?  Are we living in the wild, wild West?  Do the people of Wisconsin feel so threatened that they need to carry around guns?  And since there doesn’t seem to be any restrictions on this bill, is it really wise to say, allow an 18 year old to carry a gun with no training?  I like the comment, in the article, by Police Chief Todd Thomas when he said “…founders also made it clear that they were not unrestrained rights.”

I believe in responsible gun laws.  As a non gun owner, I see nothing wrong with having people having to go through background checks, registering your gun(s) and getting training on how to use one properly.  They make kids go through a hunter safety course before they can go hunting, but if they want to carry a concealed gun you don’t have to have training!?  WTH Wisconsin!  Have all just gone completely mental?

Wednesday Word of the Week

A girlfriend of mine recently invited me over for a fabulous dinner to help celebrate my graduating from college.  She had a delicious hors d’oeuvres or horse de overs (depending on what part of Wisconsin you’re from!)  of cheese, crackers, grapes, apples and wine.  What I really loved was the cheese.  I am from Wisconsin after all 🙂  It was a brie and it was the most delicious, creamy cheese I have ever had.

I thought it would be good to use Brie as my word of the week this week.

Brie – is a soft cow’s-milk cheese named after Brie, the French region from which it originated (roughly corresponding to the modern département of Seine-et-Marne). It is pale in color with a slight grayish tinge under a rind of white mold. The rind is typically eaten, with its flavor depending largely upon the ingredients used and its manufacturing environment.

And while I don’t usually endorse any product here (and I am not getting paid for this), the picture below is the Brie cheese we had that night.  OMG, it was yummy in my tummy!  If you’ve never had Brie before I urge you to give this one a try – you won’t be disappointed. Oh and be sure you have some high quality crackers with it.

Wednesday Word of the Week

So one of the things I’ve been playing around with is doing a word of the week kind of thing.    I’m just going to blindly open my dictionary and pick a word.  Thought Wednesday would be the day since it fits with the “w” theme.  So without further ado, here is the Wednesday Word of the Week:

Uncork – to pull the cork out of.

Ah, this is the perfect word to start this new endeavor!  When I saw this word, I immediately thought of wine…nectar of the Gods in my opinion.  Although anyone who enjoys wine knows you never uncork the wine, you open it to let it breath 🙂

uncork a red

And yes, I just realized that today is Thursday *haha*
